If you own a spacious back, then it would be a shame not to use it to the fullest. Moreover, the backyard can be more than just a place to relax after work or for a weekend party. With a bit of creative thinking, you have the possibility to create a great outdoor entertainment area.

It can be versatile in nature so all members of the family, as well as neighbors and family friends, can use it to relax and have fun. If you’re hyped out about transforming your backyard but lack inspirational ideas, the following 6 exterior design tips will help you create a dreamlike outdoor space.

Fire up the atmosphere

One the biggest reason why you are unable to use the garden when the weather is fine is the fact that it can get quite chilly at night. This is especially true for months like April or September when outside temperatures are still not high enough after sunset to stay outside for long periods.

This is where a fireplace would come in handy. Building a fire pit is easier than you might think, as this is definitely a DIY job. As far as the materials are concerned, you can source rocks and boulders from the ground on your property. After you construct the pit, you need to get warm blankets and enough marshmallows to sit deep into the night telling stories.

The calming sound of running water

Life would be much better if there was an ambient theme song playing in the back. Well, your backyard could have such a melody in the form of a water fountain. Unlike the fire pit, a water fountain can be bought ready-made so all you need is a water tap in the garden.

If you own a large-enough garden, then the fountain’s outlet can be turned into a streamlet that would serve both an aesthetic and an irrigational purpose if you own a vegetable garden. Of course, there are countless more water features that will boost the fun factor of your garden. These include but are not limited to an Olympic-size swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a splash pad for the kids, a plunge pool or a lap pool.

Protection from above

We’ve mentioned earlier how a fire pit will allow you to stay in the backyard after dark but what about the cloudy days when it rains often? If you had a patio roof you could sip coffee even if it’s pouring outside but then this roof would blot out the sun the rest of the year.

The ideal solution, therefore, is an opening roof. Roof structures like the slim-lined louvre roof system are made from aluminum which makes them ideal for houses and backyards of various shapes. Installing an opening roof is more of a design issue because in terms of engineering everything is possible.

Choosing the right furniture

If you’re planning for an entertainment area that will have electrical devices like a gaming console, then you have to get adequate seating. Garden furniture should be both functional and comfortable, i.e. ergonomic.  The former includes tables and chairs made from plastic or other waterproof materials. Our advice is not to add cushions unless you are erected a roof because you’ll have to bring in cushions inside every time it rains. As far as comfort is concerned, make sure the sofa you place outside can be cleaned using nothing more than a wet cloth.

Cooking outside

If there is one addition to the backyard that has the potential to substantially increase the value of the entire property, then it’s an outdoor kitchen. Every realtor will advise you to build an outdoor kitchen if you have the money and the opportunity to do so.

Although it might sound fancy, an outdoor kitchen is basically and outdoor source of running water. However, a simple sink allows you to prepare a backyard party and to invite more people. Add a stove to the equation and you won’t have to own a grill that is hard to clean.

Lighting the backyard

Finally, the backyard should be well-lit if you plan on spending having fun after dark. In reality, no garden party can be deemed a success unless it lasts after dark. That is why the lighting fixtures in the garden should be more elaborate than a couple of incandescent lightbulbs.

For once, you can line the pathways with garden lights that are solar-powered and activated automatically by a motion sensor. Not only will this Lighting Solution save money but the garden will be more attractive to visitors.

Further on, you should experiment with lines of color-changing LED lights. They are ideal for parties or any other source of entertainment and they double as excellent Christmas decorations.

There are many more inspiring ideas for your outdoor entertainment area but the 6 improvements listed above are more than enough to get you started. Some are DIY projects, while others require a bigger investment but all of the projects pay off in the end.
