Alternatives for the FOODS You Should Never Eat

We all enjoy food that’s bad for us. Why? Because it fills us up and satisfies us. But some foods can seriously mess with your health.

The worst culprits are additives in highly processed foods. “We really don’t know what the long-term consequences of eating these science projects might be,” says Rachel Harvest, a registered dietitian affiliated with the Tournesol Wellness in New York.

Eating fats that are heavily processed can cause damage cellular function of your body, causing your body to work harder which leads to many long-term health conditions.

1. Processed Meat:

Processed meats are extremely high in fat and sodium and are one of the main contributors to excess body fat. Processed meats in the U.S. such as ham, salami, hot dogs, and bacon aren’t just full of unhealthy fats. They can have up to 400 percent (!) More sodium and 50 percent more preservatives than unprocessed red meats. The worst part: Some contain nitrites and nitrates, chemical additives that have been linked to various cancers, but are still used to enhance color, promote taste, and prevent spoilage. And food coloring. Once again, because of the processing, many unhealthy properties are added to meat that makes them harmful to the body.

2. Cheese:

Canned cheeses are among one of the top worst things you can eat, especially if it’s something that you do on a regular basis. A lot of people have really gotten hooked on this and is one of their biggest downfalls. The amount you would put on a cracker would equal to around 140 calories, while if you went for the real thing, and bought a soft cheese, it could reduce that dramatically.

3. Trans Fat:

Any food that contains trans fat, otherwise known as hydrogenated oils, definitely makes the list of worst fatty foods to eat. Trans fats are created from oils that go through the process of hydrogenation. When oils go through hydrogenation, they are heated to high temperatures and chemically altered, making them cancer causing. Trans fatty acids also go through a bleaching and deodorizing process, which makes them really unhealthy for the body to consume.

4. Sodas:

Diet soda contains the artificial sweeteners discussed above. Regular soda is a culprit as well, however. These sodas all contain processed sugar, which has no health benefit to the body like organic sugar in small amounts does. This processed sugar leads to all kinds of skin related problems, including acne.

5. “Sugar-Free” Candies:

Sweets that are specifically advertised as “sugar-free” tend to contain artificial sweeteners too. Also: The digestive system doesn’t do a great job at breaking down sugar substitutes and sugar alcohols, Harvest says. When you overdo it (and the threshold is different for everyone) you could incur some serious stomach pains.

6. Chips:

Are loaded with calories and fat. They are also in most cases salted, so this makes it even worse for you. Chips are what people grab when they just want to sit down and munch on something, but there is a better alternative. While popcorn and rice cakes are not necessarily healthy for you, it takes 3 1/4 cups of popcorn to make 100 calories, while only a handful of chips could cost you 150 calories.

The next time you go grocery shopping or go out to eat, think twice about the foods you are putting into your body. So try and stay away from foods that contain a lot of salt, butter, and fats. Fruits and vegetables are ALWAYS a good alternative to anything. They will fill you up and be very healthy for you.
